The 5 Physical Tests All Nike Athletes Take at the Nike Sport Research Lab

Image
Thousands of athletes come through the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL) every year; many of them are professional. The first thing each does is take a digital survey that asks about their activity and sport, goals and motivation, product history, preferences and future needs. From there, the athlete goes through five physical baseline tests. These tests are the first, critical step in developing strong relationships with athletes. Nike uses each test to consistently and thoroughly evaluate every athlete in order to get a better understanding of them. This technology also helps Nike build a huge global database that informs design and fine tunes fit for footwear to apparel. Matthew Nurse, Vice President of the NSRL, breaks down the tests and explains how each plays a crucial role in Nike's understanding of all athletes, and how the insights and results of these assessments help researchers and designers create new technologies for apparel and footwear. 1. Converse and DOE Unveil "Be Formless" Collection

Image
Shanghai streetwear boutique DOE, takes its name from the moniker for the anonymous or unknown person: John Doe. Celebrating its 5th anniversary, Converse's collaboration with DOE connects the name with the traditional Eastern philosophy "empty your mind, be formless." "I wanted to celebrate our 5-year anniversary of the shop by reflecting DOE’s attitude into the design details for the Chuck 70 and Jack Purcell. In Western culture, DOE identifies as anyone and everyone, which is echoed in our choice of the silhouettes, which are worn and loved by so many across China,” says Terry Zhu, co-founder of DOE. The capsule collection is highlighted by the Chuck 70 and Jack Purcell, both of rich carry cubed graphics, inspired by "suprematism," a challenge to traditional figurative art, and prepared in an engineered jacquard knit. A woodgrain print features in the sockliner (a reference to the wooden anniversary marked by 5 years). A track jacket, track pant and

Nike and FC Internazionale Milano Raid the Vault for 20th Anniversary Jersey

Image
The 2018-19 season marks the 20th year of partnership between FC Internazionale Milano and Nike. All of the season's kits have paid respect to this anniversary. As a final ode, the 20th Anniversary Jersey combines 10 of the club's most storied designs. “Some of these are synonymous with great victories, while others are fan favorites," says Pete Hoppins, Nike Football Apparel Senior Design Director. "The real challenge was to get all the different striped patterns to work cohesively." Among those kits is a shirt from Inter’s first season with Nike in 1998-99 that legendary striker Ronaldo wore; a look from the club’s centenary season in 2008-09 what was captained by Inter legend Javier Zanetti and the kit from the club's historic treble-winning campaign of 2009-10. The jersey will be worn during the upcoming Milan derby, and along with the standard stadium jersey, a Vaporknit match-level version has been produced and limited to 1,908 units to honor In

Nike Air Force 1 x Emotionally Unavailable

Image
February 26, 2019 - With focus on sweat and T-shirts, Emotionally Unavailable was a lighthearted partnership founded by Edison Chen and KB Lee in 2014. Now, it's maturing into a fully fledged collection. "We have a fan base that pushed us toward being more serious about the brand. Now we're 1,000 percent serious, and our partnership with Nike on this Air Force 1 is testament to us putting the brand to the forefront," says Chen. The silhouette and material (canvas to nod to the Nike Vandal, which Lee recalls first thinking was an AF1) represent the designers' roots and relationship with Nike. "Growing up in Korea, the canvas Air Force One is a universal shoe. Hip-hop heads wore it. Skaters wore it. It covered multiple subcultures," says Lee. "It also just looks cool because it wears down so well." The shoe is intended to be well-loved — which will become evident through a beautiful patina. The zippered gusset makes it easy to take on and off
