The Nike Atsuma Turns Negative Space into Positive (Aesthetic) Energy

Image
December 23, 2019 - The lateral side Swoosh of Nike’s new classically styled runner, the Atsuma, is mirrored by a cutout version on the medial. It's a handsome aesthetic feature — pleasant for looks alone — but also one that manifested a design challenge. The charge: Reduce material waste by increasing pattern efficiency. Nike Atsuma rethinks and reimagines how traditional cut-and-sew footwear can be improved by considering how offcuts can act as critical components of the shoe's construction and beautiful elements of its design. In addition to the lateral and medial panels, the shoe’s heel counter and eyestay exhibit playful employment of negative space. So too does the hangtag, which is formed by a cutout on the outsole. A recycled sockliner adds to the considered decisions. The Nike Atsuma releases January 1.
